Selection Rules
At each book selection meeting, up to twelve members select a book from our list. The books selected by the members are ordered randomly, and form the reading schedule. When we're almost finished with all of the members' selected books, we'll do another book selection.
The group will not put a book on the reading list more than once, unless unanimously agreed at a book selection meeting.
Books that aren't readily available will not be chosen for the group.
No member can veto a book selection except for the reasons above.
If multiple members select the same title at a book selection meeting, I'll give a place in the reading list to each submitter, and schedule the title for the earlier position.
Titles from a series must be read in order by the group. To select a title from a series, please name the series (rather than the title) at the book selection meeting, and I'll schedule the first title we haven't read. If multiple members select the same series, I'll schedule multiple titles instead of scheduling them as duplicates. Right now, titles are available from these series (see the book list for details):
- The Parable Series, by Octavia E. Butler
- The Space Trilogy, by C.S. Lewis
- The Lensman Series, by E. E. Smith
- The Book of the New Sun, by Gene Wolf
If you expect to miss a book selection meeting, please submit your title to the chair before the meeting. If you submit a title after the meeting, the chair decides whether it's too late to add it to the list.
If you wish to select a title not on the list, introduce it on the mailing list, then attend a meeting and nominate it for addition to the list. After a brief discussion, in which all members will have the opportunity to argue for or against the title, the book can be added to the list if there's a simple majority vote in favor.
If a new member joins between book selection meetings, she may be given an opportunity to select a book at the next book selection meeting.
